On December 21, our Cedar Grove Chapter lost a dear friend, mentor and devout Unican in Anthony Ricciardi.  The Chapter announced the formation of a permanent scholarship in Tony's name, The Anthony Ricciardi Scholarship.  Each year the Cedar Grove Chapter will honor a single Cedar Grove student, as long as the student resides in Cedar Grove with an award showing outstanding academic achievement while excelling in mathematics.  Please honor Tony's memory.

Thanks to these Youth Volunteers for helping our Turkey Drive

This year our Chapter donated 513 turkey's to St. Lucy's Parish in Newark.  It was our best year!!  Thanks to all who donated items and time to make this so successful.

As you may be aware, UNICO National has been greatly disturbed by the MTV series, "Jersey Shore".  Our Youth Chair, Katie Corrado recently sent a letter to MTV outlining the National Youth Committee's distain for this ethnic bashing, farce of a show.  Please read it.  It'll make you proud of Katie.

Dear Mr. DiSanto, On behalf of the UNICO National Youth Committee, I am writing in regards to your newest show, Jersey Shore. As proud Italian-Americans, this show is insulting and demeaning to our entire culture. Your show paints an extremely unrealistic picture of young Italian-Americans, and promotes a stereotype based on only a small minority of our culture. We are not fist-pumping, hair-gelling club-goers. We do not consider ourselves “guidos,” and do not take pride in identifying ourselves as such. We are hard-working, family-oriented young adults who are proud of our culture and heritage. As members of UNICO’s National Youth Committee, we take pride in our service to our communities. We participate in food and clothing drives, fundraise for a group home, and do yard work for our elderly neighbors. As a communications major at Fordham University, I understand that these things do not necessarily make for great television. However, in our opinion, perpetuating a negative stereotype of the entire Italian-American community does not make outstanding television either. At what point will MTV stop and realize that their programming crosses a line? The show has already received much negative media attention as Domino’s retracted their ads and UNICO National President Andre’ DiMino called for the show’s cancellation through several major media outlets. Is it worth it to demean an entire culture for the sake of a reality television show? We don’t think so. And with our demographic as your target audience, we hope you find our concerns compelling. It is one thing to create a show like The Real World; it is an entirely other matter to negatively target an entire ethnicity for the sake of your ratings. For all these reasons, the entire UNICO National Youth Committee asks for the swift and immediate cancellation of Jersey Shore. Although this might cause rating to temporarily suffer, we are confident it would ultimately uphold the integrity of the entire MTV brand. Is this show worth compromising viewership and the network’s reputation? We think not. Sincerely,Katie CorradoUNICO National Youth Committee
